KDBA July Show Me Shootout

The Kentucky Drag Boat Association began to wind down its 2023 race season with the staging of the Show Me Shootout at Lake Lucas in Wheatland, Missouri.

Eighty-five race teams traveled to Missouri to compete in ten different classes, with several of them fielding ten or more race teams in contention for points and prize money.

Top Alcohol Hydro

Marty Logan ran a single for the TAH victory when Mike DeClark’s “Lil White Lie” machine broke on the starting line.
Four race teams traveled from as far as California and South Carolina to join the Top Alcohol Hydro class, and Rick Allen of Fort Smith, Arkansas led the field with a stout 4.311-second qualifying pass at 205.10 miles per hour. South Carolina-based Andy Reynolds also broke the 200 mile-per-hour barrier to take the number two qualifying spot with a 4.348-second run at 202.70 mph, and Marty Logan and Mike DeClark each posted elapsed times in the 4.4-second range to round out the field in the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. Eliminations on Sunday was a bust, however, as, in the opening round on Sunday, Rick Allen’s “Total Kaos” machine surprisingly broke on theMike DeClark ran a single on his way to the TAH final when Rick Allen’s “Total Kaos” machine was unable to fire on the starting line. starting line, advancing Mike DeClark automatically with a modest 4.810-second run, and likewise, Andy Reynolds’ “Running With Scissors” also broke on the line, advancing Marty Logan automatically. In the second and final round of TAH competition, Mike DeClark’s “Little White Lie” machine broke on the starting line, and Marty Logan drove his “Livin Tha Dream” TAH to the winner’s circle by default as he cruised through the racecourse with a modest 6.608-second elapsed time at 66.29 miles per hour.

Pro Comp Flat

The Show Me Shootout hosted seven tough Pro Comp Flat competitors, and the top four contenders each posted elapsed times within .0 of their picked indexes. John Haefele was just .022 above his 6.900-second dial-in to take the number one qualifying spot and Tony Scarlata took the number two spot with a closely matched 7.229-second ET against his 7.200 dial-in. 

The Pro Comp Flat final was a great race to the finish, with John Haefele taking the win over Todd Harper by a slim .071 margin of victory.

GW Goff and Kevin Dedmon also qualified well with elapsed times within .074 and .088 of their picked indexes to take the third and fourth qualifying positions, respectively, and David Merchant, Scott Schuette and Todd Harper rounded out the field in the fifth, sixth and seventh spots.

John Haefele secured the top qualifying spot after posting a stellar 6.922-second elapsed time against his picked index of 6.900-seconds.The round two matchup between John Haefele and David Merchant was determined at the start, where John advanced on the lesser of two red light infractions.

Eighty-five race teams traveled to Missouri to compete in ten different classes, with several of them fielding ten or more race teams in contention for points and prize money.

John Haefele got the benefit of the bye in the opening round on Sunday and each of the remaining races in round one was decided by default, as Tony Scarlata and Kevin Dedmon broke out and Scott Schuette redlit, advancing Todd Harper, David Merchant, and GW Goff automatically. In round two, GW’s machine surprisingly broke on the starting line, advancing Todd to the final automatically to face John Haefele, who had advanced over David Merchant in the prior round on a double red-light infraction. The final between John and Todd was a great race to the finish, as Todd logged a near-perfect 9.208-second run against his 9.200 index, but John was just slightly quicker at the starting line, taking the PCF victory by a .071 margin!

Pro Outlaw

Justin Schmidt took the top qualifying spot in the 5.2-second Pro Outlaw class after posting a stout 5.236-second run during time trials, and he was the only one in the class to hit the 5.2-second range in the class on Saturday.

In the final round of Pro Outlaw competition, Colby Nofire took the win over Jacob Schneider (far lane) by a very slim .011 margin of victory.

Justin was supposed to go up against Jacob Schneider in round one of eliminations on Sunday, but the Robert Leas-owned “Wildfire” machine broke and Jacob Schneider advanced to the final on a single, while Colby Nofire advanced over Don Gordy and advanced to the final against Jacob.

In the opening round of Pro Outlaw eliminations between Colby Nofire and Don Gordy (far lane), both men logged .0 reaction times, but Colby was quicker at both ends of the track to defeat Don and move on to the semifinals.

 Again, the final between Jacob and Colby was a great race, as both men logged identical reaction times and both men ran elapsed times in the 5.3-second range, but Colby ran the quicker 5.301-second ET to take the Pro Outlaw win by a very slim .011 margin of victory!

Pro Modified

Tyler Salsman (far lane) was slightly quicker at both ends of the track in his final round matchup against Forrest Warren.The margin between the top four competitors in the highly competitive Pro Modified class was just six one-hundredths of a second at the completion of Saturday’s time trials, and Tyler Salsman was the top qualifier after logging a near-perfect 5.609-second

run against the 5.60-second class index while Shawn Reed ran a 5.628 for the number two spot, Shelby Ebert posted a 5.651 for the number three position, and Jeremy Schmidt posted a 5.678-second elapsed time to secure the fourth qualifying spot. In the opening round of Pro Mod competition between the number two qualifier, Shawn Reed (near lane), and number seven, Thomas Franklin, both me ran closely matched elapsed times in the 5.6-second range, but Shawn took the win with the slightly quicker 5.631-second run.

Tyler got the bye in round one on Sunday while Mike Lamb paired a .047 reaction time with a 5.678-second elapsed time to defeat Jeremy Schmidt, Shawn Reed was quicker at both ends of the track to defeat Thomas Franklin, and in a surprise upset, Shelby Ebert picked up a very slim .007 red light to automatically advance Forrest Warren to the semifinals.

Forrest faced Shawn Reed in the semis and he clicked off a stout .116 reaction time to advance automatically over Shawn, who red-lit, and Tyler Salsman advanced easily over Mike Lamb with a near-perfect .006 reaction time and an equally impressive 5.677- second elapsed time, as Mike’s “Just One More” machine broke on the run.

The final round of Pro Modified was anticlimactic, though, as both Tyler and Forrest Warren slowed on their runs, and Tyler took the PM victory with a modest 5.801-second elapsed time at just 134.89 miles per hour.

Quick Eliminator

The 6.00-second Quick Eliminator class had twelve tough race teams, and Jeremy Schmidt, doing double duty in the driver’s seat for David Schmidt this weekend, took the top qualifying spot with a stout 6.023-second qualifying run. KDBA rules allow breakouts during time trials in the ET classes, so Barry Salsman took the number two spot with a 5.984,

In the final round of QE competition between Kris Mosier (near lane) and Steve Wagner, both men broke out, but Kris also picked up a -.031 red light, and Steve secured the win with a .026 reaction time and 5.998-second elapsed time on his winning run.

Ronnie Jennings was third with a 6.066, Tip Draffen was fourth with a 5.998, Rock Guthrie was fifth with a 6.095, Anthony Veneri, Ed Anderson, and Mike King each posted elapsed times in the 6.1-second range to take the sixth, seventh, and eighth spots, while Jeff Weimer, Steve Wagner and Bill Henderson secured the number nine through eleven positions, respectively, and Kris Mosier was inserted as the slow boat, as he had just licensed in the class earlier that morning. In a surprise upset on Sunday, Jeremy Schmidt picked up a -.014 red light that automatically advanced Kris Mosier, Barry Salsman advanced automatically when Bill Henderson fouled out, Steve Wagner clicked off a .018 reaction time to defeat the quicker 6.049-second effort by Ronnie Jennings, and Tip Draffen advanced easily over Jeff Weimer with a .091 reaction time and equally impressive 6.091-second elapsed time.ADVERTISEMENT - GRP CONNECTING RODSAnd last, but not least, in the round one matchup between Rock Guthrie and Mike King, both men had closely matched reaction times and elapsed times, and Mike took the win by a slim .003 margin with the slightly slower reaction time, but quicker 6.026-second elapsed over Rock’s .126 r/t and 6.082-second ET. Likewise, in the round one race between Anthony Veneri and Ed Anderson, both men had closely matched E/Ts and R/Ts, but Anthony was slightly quicker at both ends of the track to take the win by a .093 margin. In round two, Anthony’s machine broke, advancing Kris Mosier automatically, which gave Kris an automatic trip to the final by virtue of getting the bye in the semifinal, while Steve Wagner defeated Tip Draffen.

In the round two matchup between Barry Salsman and Mike King, both men had identical .057 reaction times and both men ran near-identical elapsed times, but Barry’s slightly quicker 6.045-second ET sent him to the semifinals by a very slim .010 margin! Barry broke out in his semifinal matchup against Steve Wagner, and in the final between Steve and Kris Mosier, Steve broke out, but took the QE victory by default, as Kris picked up a -.031 red light. Can you say, “Beginner’s Luck”?
 

Pro Eliminator

In the Pro Eliminator final between Bill Delve (near lane) and Daryl Busby, was off the line first and posted a 6.556-second elapsed time that forced Daryl to break out at the top end of the track.

The Pro Eliminator class was comprised of nine race teams, and the margin between the number one and number six qualifiers in the class was a slim 7/100ths of a second. David Schmidt secured the top qualifying honors in the class after posting a near perfect 6.505-second elapsed time against the 6.500-second index, and Lucas Williamson had to settle for the number two spot with a near-identical 6.507-second run. The number three though six qualifiers ran elapsed times within .0 of the class indexes and included Daryl Busby (.048), Mark Creel (.071), Bill Delve (.076), and Ty Bollweg (.080), while Rick Mills, Shelby Stucky, and Bryce Veneri rounded out the field in the seventh, eighth, and ninth positions, respectively.

In the PE Semifinal matchup between Bill Delve and Lucas Williamson (far lane), Lucas was off the line first, but he broke out at the top end of the track, sending Bill Delve to the final automatically.

As top qualifier, David Schmidt got the bye in the opening round of eliminations while Bill Delve was able to drive around Ty Bollweg for the round one win, Lucas Williamson defeated Bryce Veneri, Daryl Busby red lit, but advanced anyway, as Shelby Stucky’s machine was unable to fire on the starting line, and Mark Creel negated his quicker .030 reaction time when he broke out in his round one matchup against Rick Mills. Rick fell to Daryl Busby on a double breakout, giving Daryl the benefit of a bye in the semifinals and an automatic trip to the final. Lucas Williamson got the round two bye while David Schmidt redlit and broke out in in his round two matchup against Lucas Williamson, but Lucas broke out in the semifinals, sending Bill Delve to the final against Daryl Busby. In their final round matchup, Daryl logged a too quick 6.451-second elapsed time while trying to catch Bill at the top end of the track and Bill Delve secured the PE Show Me Shootout victory.

Top Eliminator

The final round of Top Eliminator competition between the top qualifier, Matt Crews, and number five, Tony Scarlata (driving for George Goff) was an all-Crews race with Matt logging a stout .036 reaction time and a near perfect 7.012-second elapsed time at 115.80 miles per hour over Tony’s 7.042-second effort at 108.85 miles per hour.The KDBA Top Eliminator class featured ten race teams and there was a slim .065 margin between the number one and number six qualifiers. Matt Crews secured the top qualifying spot in e the class after logging a 7.030-second elapsed time against the 7.000-second index, and Drake Mosier took the number two position with a 7.063, while Josh Womack and Jake Ballard posted identical elapsed times of 7.083 seconds to land the number three and four spots, and Tony Scarlata, doing the driving for GW Goff this weekend, posted a closely matched 7.084-second run for the number five spot, and Mike Fawk secured the number six position after logging a 7.095-second run.

The round one race between Kody Bryant and Drake Mosier was a great race to the finish, with Drake driving around Kody for the win by a slim .061 margin of victory. TE RU Trophy: George Goff accepted the Top Eliminator Runner-Up trophy.

Kyle Harrington, Shea Harrington, and Kody Bryant qualified in the seventh, eighth, and ninth positions, respectively, and Michael Gladney was inserted as the slow boat for competition on Sunday. Michael knew that he would have to cut a good light to have a chance at beating Matt in round one, but he charged the clock too hard and picked up a -.121 red light, advancing Matt automatically with a stout 7.015-second run, and sending him to the semifinals by virtue of a bye in round two. In other round one action, Jake Ballard paired a .056 reaction time with an equally impressive 7.048-second elapsed time that forced Shea Harrington to break out while trying to catch Jake at the top end of the track, Kyle Harrington defeated Josh Womack, Drake Mosier got a late start off the line but was able to drive around Kody Bryant for the round one win, and Tony Scarlata combined a .031 reaction time with a near perfect 7.012-second elapsed to defeat Mike Falk, who struggled on the starting line. Tony was quicker at both ends of the track again in his round two matchup against Drake Mosier, forcing Drake to break out and sending Tony to the final by virtue of a bye in semifinals, and Jake Ballard used a 7.050-second elapsed time to drive around Kyle Harrington and sending him to the semifinals against Matt Crews.

In their semifinal matchup, Jake negated a stout 7.029-second run when he picked up a-.138 red light, advancing Matt automatically, despite running a too-quick 6.959-second run. In the final between Matt Crews and Tony Scarlata, Matt hammered out a .036 reaction time and equally impressive 7.012-second elapsed time to take the TE victory, and Tony took the runner up honors with a .155 r/t and 7.042-second ET.

Modified Eliminator

The 8-second Modified Eliminator class featured a staggering fifteen-boat field, and only 6/100ths of a second separated the number one through eight qualifiers. Hardy Cole led the field at the close of time trials after posting an 8.024-second elapsed

The number three and four qualifiers, Bradley Johnson and Mark Kohenskey, Jr, both posted elapsed times within .03 of the 8.00-second index, while Tim Bostick logged an 8.042 for the number five position, Sarah Falk was sixth with an 8.056, Scott See was seventh with an 8.079 and Bill Miles was eighth with an 8.084.

Sarah struggled to get off the starting line again in her round two matchup against Bradley Johnson and this time she broke out while trying to catch Bradley at the top end of the track. Next, in the round two matchup between Kilea Ann Kloekner and Jenna Schmidt, both women broke out, but Jenna also picked up a narrow -.009 red light, automatically advancing Kilea Ann to the semifinals. Likewise, Mark Kohenskey advanced over Tim Bostic on a double red-light infraction, and Hardy Cole negated an 8.019-second run when he picked up a -.037 red light, automatically advancing Bill Miles to the semis.

The semifinal matchup between Bill Miles and Mark Kohenskey was a great race to the finish, as Bill ran the quicker 8.280-second elapsed time compared to the 8.439-second run by Mark, but Mark’s stout .069 reaction time gave him a .125-second edge at the finish line! On the other side of the ladder, both Kilea Ann and Bradley Johnson red lit, but Bradley advanced on the first or worst rule and went on to face Mark Kohenskey in the final. Bradley brought out the big guns in his final round matchup against Mark, as he clicked off a stout .040 reaction time and a near-perfect 8.012-second elapsed time to take the automatic win, as Mark ran a too-quick 7.969-second ET while trying to catch Bradley at the top end of the track.

Stock Eliminator

The top five of the twelve-boat field of Stock Eliminator race teams posted elapsed times within .0 of their respective dial-ins. Denise Hodges led the field at the close of time trials after running a stout 9.037-second elapsed time against her 9.00-second index.

William picked up a very narrow -.005 red light that guaranteed Brian Elledge to the final, as he got the bye in the semifinals, and on the other side of the ladder, Steve Dollens beat Denise Hodges on a hole shot and Seth Massey paired a .142 reaction time with a near-perfect 9.009-second elapsed time to defeat Scott Malone and face Steve Dollens in the semifinal. In the semifinal matchup between Seth and Steve, both men broke out and Seth advanced with the lesser breakout of 8.991 seconds.

In the final between Seth and Brian Elledge, Seth was off the line first with a .118 reaction time, but he broke out at the top end of the track, and Brian took the SE victory with a stout 10.073-second elapsed time against his 10.00 dial-in.

Personal Water Craft

Surprisingly, the PWC class featured a scant five-ski field, but four of the eight qualified within .0 of their respective dial-ins.

Graydon Parham got to the finish line first in the final round of PWC competition, but the win went to Stacy Hughes, as Graydon picked up a -.082 red light. The loss was especially disappointing for Graydon, as Stacy struggled on the starting line and was .491 after the green light.

As top qualifier, Michael Boone got the benefit of the bye in the opening round of eliminations while Graydon Parham defeated Ryan O’Hara, and Stacy Hughes paired a .093 reaction with an 11.447-second elapsed time against her 11.442 dial-in to take the win over Addyson Leas, Stacy got the round two bye, giving her a trip to the final automatically, and Michael Boone lost to Graydon Parham on a red light. In the final between Grayden and Stacy Hughes, Grayden fell victim to the dreaded red light, and Stacy secured the PWC victory.
